For the record...

I got up this morning, ON A SUNDAY MORNING, at 6am, to go for a run! And I ran....wait for it, wait for it....

5k!

We're going to the beach today, and I knew that if I didn't go run before, it wouldn't happen today...but I already didn't run Friday and Saturday, so I really wanted to go today. So I did it.

Now I have to get Joel out of bed and get us ready for the beach, because the boy ain't getting up!

P.S. Mere, I know that they say that the intervals are more effective for calorie burn- here is my problem. When I run on a treadmill, it doesn't count my real calories, it counts only according to its own gadgets. So, when I run, I don't see as big a number at the end of the interval run as I do at the end of the straight runs. Also, I will say that the interval runs feel easier than the straight runs. So, right now, everything is conspiring against me to make me think that straight running is more work, and therefore more calories. Clearly, what I need is a good heart-rate monitor, so I can actually know what I am doing calorie wise. Maybe a certain someone who told me last night that he doesn't know what to get me for Christmas, *coughJoelcough*, might read this, and surprise me with one. :)

Congrats on the 5K!

Re: the intervals - why do you need to count calories for it? I don't count calories for any cardio I do - I think it would just be another thing to get obsessed about.

If you do intervals where you are actually SPRINTING, like really fast, you will feel it, trust me!

If you have the time and inclination, hang around the Women's Fitness Ideas and Fitness Getting Started WW boards - I have learned a LOT from reading the posts there over the past couple of months.

Mere, thanks! I don't actually count the calories- I don't count food calories either, so it really doesn't matter if I do notice how many calories I've burned.

I guess this is where I am right now- I can run, but only at a certain pace for an extended period of time. When I was doing intervals, I was doing running/walking. When I run, I run at the same running speed. I feel like I might be able to build up to doing intervals of running/sprinting eventually, but I'm not there yet. If I did that now, I would just get tired in about 10 minutes.

Dont do interval work yet. Your heart, and body are not anywhere ready for it. Slow and steady wins the race and keeps your healthy thus keeping you running thus keeping you burning those calories.

Interval work is stressful on the body and needs a lot of prep.

I found it to be the opposite - running at the same pace is far more tiring for me than interval work.

Interval work doesn't need to be stressful or require a lot of prep, in my opinion - look at the Couch to 5K program as an example of intervals starting from a beginners base.

I do not have a wonderful cardio fitness level, and I have had no issues with intervals.

But, each to their own, you've got to do what's right for you, what you enjoy, etc etc etc :)

P.S. I love intervals because I don't enjoy cardio, and burning more calories in 20 minutes than in 40 minutes or more is almost like magic to me!

Okay, enough comments from me on this topic. I'll shush now.

you can do intervals of running faster within your run, right? That will improve your overall time in the 5k and will build up your aerobic capacity. Good going on the 5k, must have felt great. Do you run it around the compound where you are? I'm not clear on how much you can circulate freely around where you live, and am curious.

keep up the fabulous work!

I run on a treadmill Eileen- in the on campus gym. Frankly, at the time that I run, it's just too hot to run outside. If I were to get up regularly in the mornings to run, I could run outside. My colleague who runs does so outside most days. And there are a couple ladies on campus who walk every morning- all of this happens outside our compound walls. We live in Luanda Sul, the South part of Luanda, which is still being developed (rapidly at that). But for now, it's safer, and not as busy as downtown. We do have a couple grocery stores within walking distance, and Joel and I have walked to both of them (one is actually visible from the school gates, the other is a 15-20 minute walk). We recently received an email message cautioning us from walking to the shops, because apparently it's obvious, and makes us targets for muggings because we all carry lots of money when we go shopping (Joel and I spend $200 at least every week when we do our big shop). There are stories of people being held up at gun point- so you are making a choice to walk outside the compound walls. We drive most places, except the grocery store that we can see from here (in fact, Joel is running down to get something this morning on one of his free lessons). Basically, we are actually free to go and do whatever we want in Luanda- if we leave a certain radius of Luanda, we do need security clearance (like when we went camping). It's up to us to make sound decisions, and we do go into town to go to restaurants and bars, and we go to stores, and we go to the markets on the side of the street- but at this point, Luanda just isn't the kind of city (I don't think) that you would want to just stroll around. It's too dirty, too crowded, and yes, too dangerous.
